Certification of Oil Industry Expertise

A candidate must demonstrate to Mennta Energy Solutions that they have earned the Certification of Oil Industry Expertise through successful completion of fifteen web-based courses and one comprehensive final written exam.

The learning objectives of the ten mandatory courses and five electives will combine to develop an understanding of the entire oil value chain in order to successfully write the final exam.

 Petroleum Refining Made Easy
  • Distinguish between the basic characteristics of crude oil
  • Identify what an oil refinery is and what three stages go into making finished petroleum products
  • Identify what happens during the separation stage
  • Recognize the processes involved in the conversion stage – cracking, combining and rearranging
  • Identify what is involved in the blending and treatment stage
  • Point out what happens to the hydrocarbon gases created during the refining process
  • Distinguish between the main groups of finished petroleum products and their characteristics
  • Identify the primary characteristics of the three main types of refineries
 Petroleum Products Trading
  • Point out the different motivations for trading petroleum products
  • Identify the major products trading markets and their characteristics
  • Identify the key specifications and blending issues for petroleum products
  • Recognize the trading strategies including arbitrage and storage plays
  • Distinguish the differences between fundamental and technical analysis
  • Identify the mechanics of trading, including product contracts
  • Select the trading instruments used in the petroleum products market

 Introduction to Petroleum Chemistry
  • Recognize the chemical and physical properties of crude oil and natural gas
  • Point out the atomic structure of hydrocarbon molecules
  • Distinguish between the four major classes of hydrocarbon molecules – paraffins, olefins, naphthenes and aromatics
  • Identify the characteristics of esters
 Introduction to Refinery Economics
  • Identify the factors affecting refinery profitability
  • Recognize how crude oil quality affects refining value
  • Identify how refineries plan and optimize their output
  • Point out how refinery margins are calculated
  • Distinguish between the main trends in worldwide refining
 Oil Storage Overview
  • Recognize where oil storage fits within the oil supply value chain
  • Distinguish between the main types of storage used
  • Identify the ways in which storage is used
  • Recognize the fundamentals of the oil storage market
  • Point out the economics of valuing and accounting for oil in storage, as well as the main hedging techniques
 Chemistry in the Petroleum Refinery
  • Identify the main categories of hydrocarbons and their characteristics
  • Recognize how high-value products are produced in a refinery
  • Point out the distillation process and its resulting products
  • Recognize light ends, where they come from and how they are used to make finished petroleum products
  • Identify what octane is and how octane levels in motor gasoline are raised
  • Recognize why cracking is such an important refinery process
  • Identify the impurities that might be found in crude oil and how they can be handled
 A Basic Overview of Petrochemicals
  • Identify the final products produced from olefin-based chemicals
  • Point out where aromatics come from and list the products they make
  • Recognize how methane is made into synthesis gas and what kinds of final products can be produced
 Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production
  • Point out how oil, natural gas and coal were formed
  • Identify the geological structures where hydrocarbons are found
  • Distinguish between the different methods of exploring for hydrocarbons
  • Point out how hydrocarbons are produced, including drilling techniques
  • Identify the different types of hydrocarbons produced
  • Recognize and discuss the main trends in the production of oil, natural gas and coal
 Applicants can choose five titles that supplement and expand along their desired training path. The mandatory courses cannot be repeated as an elective.  Electives must be two-hours in length. Please view our entire online training catalogue here.

Certification of Oil Industry Expertise Requirements and Application

  • Ten mandatory online courses
  • Five elective online courses
    • Course length must be two-hours
    • Mandatory courses cannot be repeated as an elective
  • A comprehensive final written exam will be administered after all online courses are completed.
    • Must be completed within 3 months
    • Must receive a 75% to pass final written exam
    • All final exams must be submitted in English
  • Each online course is:
    • Approximately two-hours in length
    • Complete with practice exercises, quizzes and a final exam
  • All 15 online courses must be successfully completed with at least an 80% on each final exam
    • If any exam is failed, you are entitled to take the course again for a re-examination fee of $100
    • Final written exam cannot be re-taken.
    • All online courses must be successfully completed within 12-months of commencing the programme
