Course Summary
This course provides an introduction to the role of operations in physical oil trading. You’ll learn about the role of operations, and how operators fit within the trading department. We’ll cover an overview of different types and grades of crude oil and refined products, including their quality and blending issues. We’ll review the key parts of an oil trading contract, as well as different credit instruments. We’ll consider the basics and terminology of shipping, and learn about the logistics of loading and discharging cargoes.
Course Content
You will learn to:
- Define what is the role of the operator, and how and where operators fit within the trading department.
- Identify the major grades and quality characteristics of crude oil and refined products, including blending issues.
- Identify the key clauses in an oil trading contract, as well as different credit instruments.
- Recognize the basics and terminology of oil shipping, including the chartering process and freight costs.
- Distinguish the logistics of loading and discharging cargoes, including the key documents produced during transportation.
Practice exercises and self-assessment quizzes are included to help reinforce key topics introduced throughout the course.
A comprehensive final test will be given at the end of the course.
